Many people might not realize it, but sleep is one of the most important bodily processes there is. Unless you’re not getting enough of sleep, you may not really understand how detrimental sleep deprivation may be to your health. Not only do you need sleep to restore lost energy, but it is also needed to regulate your body’s immunity prowess, metabolism and so much more. Are you getting enough sleep every night to make you feel well rested and refreshed to face the day? If so, how much do you reckon is enough? Do you sleep for at least 7 hours every night? Chances are that you aren’t. You may not regard it as problematic but sleep deprivation is a serious problem that many continue people face.

Well, you’re not alone if you’re missing out on quality sleep each and every night. In America, lack of sleep is so bad that the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has declared lack of proper sleep to be a public health epidemic. In 2016, the CDC released a press report that one out of every three Americans are not getting the sleep they require.

“As a nation, we are not getting enough sleep. Lifestyle changes such as going to bed at the same time each night, rising at the same time each morning; and turning off or removing televisions, computers, mobile devices from the bedroom, can help get the healthy sleep they need.” Dr. Wayne Giles, director of CDC’s Division of Population Health, said.

But how important is getting enough sleep every night? Very important! If you don’t get sufficient sleep for protracted periods of time, it could lead to some very serious health consequences including;
• Diabetes
• High blood pressure
• Stroke
• Heart disease
• Heart attack
• Heart failure

In some more very serious cases of sleep deprivation, death could ensue. This should let you know that being deprived of sleep is no laughing matter and if you find yourself among the vast majority – over the tens of millions – of Americans who are not enjoying sufficient sleep every night, then cannabis could be of help. Whilst sleeping pills could offer respite for your sleeping problems, they fall under the category of hypnotic drugs, which leads to more than 10,000 deaths every year.

The co-founder of Scripps Clinic Viterbi Family Sleep Center and sleep expert Daniel F. Kripke MD in a 2016 review examined all the risks and benefits associated with the use of hypnotic drugs and came out with the conclusion that the risks associated with using hypnotic drugs are far dangerous that many have been made to believe. The study revealed that using hypnotics like sleeping pills could result in;
• Depression
• Cancer
• Suicide
• Infections
• Excess mortality (overdose deaths and quiet deaths at night)

These hypnotics are often taken un-prescribed, and even when taken prescribed in their recommended doses, they do little to improve sleep. Having trouble sleeping every night? Why not turn to cannabis for help instead?

Both CBD and THC have been proven to be able to help improve sleep. For centuries people have been taking advantage of cannabis to help themselves get a good night’s sleep. In 1843, when cannabis was re-established in Western medicine by Sir William B. O’Shaughnessy, studies conducted emphasized the curative properties of ‘Indian hemp’ to sort out sleep disorders.

German researcher Bernard Fronmueller remarked in 1860. Ten years later, a study Fronmueller conducted revealed that out of 1000 study participants with sleep problems, Indian hemp was able to cure 53%, partially cured 21.5% and failed to have any considerable effect in 25.5%.

THC and sleep
THC has sedative properties so it can lull people to sleep. Studies even show that THC could be beneficial in helping to improve breathing when sleeping in those with sleep apnea. The thing about cannabis though is that using it chronically has shown to disrupt sleep. According to a study conducted in 2016, daily users of marijuana were found to score way higher on insomnia severity index and sleep performance than those who abstained from smoking weed every day. Not surprisingly, the study found that heavy and frequent usage of marijuana provided a gateway for sleep difficulties.

CBD and sleep
CBD is different from THC in that it is not intoxicating. Because of how non-psychoactive CBD is, it can actually increase wakefulness. How in the world is CBD then supposed to help a get a good night’s sleep? CBD reacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system. Considering the fact that the endocannabinoid system is complexly linked to our sleep patterns, the homeostasis provided by CBD aids in relaxing the body and making sleep attainable. For those who want to stay away from the psychoactive effects of marijuana, CBD is a good alternative.
